In spite of a great need for new workers in the construction sector, the employers report that the wage rate development is under control. Jacob Brandt, chief economist of The Danish Federation of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises said the wage rises are still moderate. He has made an analysis which shows that the construction sector could employ an additional 4000 workers, but that there is only 500 unemployed in the market. On the other hand, the already employed construction workers have not demanded drastic rises in their pay. The most recent official figures show that the pay has on average increased by 3.4 per cent from the first quarter last year to the first quarter this year.
According to Jacob Brandt it is far easier to find new orders than new employees, and this will eventually limit the Danish growth.
In an effort to relieve the shortage of workmen the Federation and Euro Info Center Viborg have invited 23 East German master craftsmen to visit Denmark in the days June 20 to 22.
Jacob Brandt admits that part of the reason why it is German craftsmen that have been invited is that they do not give rise to problems.
