Carlsberg workers down tools

A dispute over wage agreements has already led to 600 Carlsberg workers downing tools this morning, Ritzau reports. The total involved in the walkout could reach 1100, the news agency says.

Members of the general workers’ union 3F staged the walkout after management apparently gave notice of a wage freeze and shelved collective bargaining for 2010. Carlsberg’s production and distribution facilities in Fredericia and Copenhagen are currently affected, Ritzau reports

According to Borsen newspaper, Carlsberg's employees are dissatisfied with their current working conditions and fear further layoffs on top of recent mass redundancies.

"Carlsberg has been a really good workplace in the past”, union and employee representative Hans Andersen told Borsen. “However, after seeing major cuts in the workforce, all employees feel pressured".

The Danish beer giant has been seeking to make savings to absorb the impact of a declining beer market, both at home and abroad.
