The Russians buy fewer beers but Carlsberg retains a Russian market share of over 40 per cent in spite of a fall in the third quarter.
Carlsberg is by far Russia’s largest brewery group after the full acquisition of the Baltika brand which made Russia Carlsberg’s key growth market.
After the third quarter Carlsberg has increased its market share by 2.2 percentage points to 40.9 per cent compared to one year ago.
Both Heineken and SABMiller lost market shares in Russia in the third quarter.
The Russian beer market declined by an estimated 10 per cent for the first nine months.

Carlsberg notes that the generally challenging market situation will continue in 2010, referring to the Russian goverment’s proposal for a significant excise duty increase in 2010 as »a challenge«. The bill is now being discussed and a final decision is expected later this year. If the bill is implemented in its current form, it will affect the beer market negatively,« the brewery wrote.
