Carlsberg Takes Fizz Out of C20

06-08-2010 17:43 Denmark’s C20 index slumped back into negative territory today as grim figures from the US labour market and the accompanying Dow Jones gloom had a knock on effect in Copenhagen. At close of trading, the index was down 1.26 percent at 419.48.

Today’s slump came at the end of an otherwise positive week for the Danish stock market, which hit its highest level since September 2008 on Tuesday.

One of the day’s major losers was Novo Nordisk. Just a day after posting surprisingly positive results, shares in the Danish pharma giant fell 1.69 percent to DKK 498.90.

Novo's woes, however, paled in comparison with Carlsberg. Shares in the Danish brewer tumbled 5.05 percent after it became clear that the effects of a heatwave would substantially hike Russian grain prices.

Today’s winners included wind power giant Vestas whish posted a 1.46 percent rise, and shipping companies A.P. Moller-Maersk and D / S Norden, both of which posted small gains after one of their main competitors, Neptune Orient Lines, released a positive set of results.
