Danish Shipping Fleet on the Rise

Despite the recent economic slowdown, new figures show that Denmark’s merchant fleet continues to grow.
Since the start of 2010, the fleet has grown by 23 vessels to 574, and the growth looks set to continue, writes the news portal maritimedanmark.
"We consider it likely that many more ships from carriers’ 'subsidiaries abroad and newly built vessels will be flying the Danish flag in the future," the Deputy Director of the Danish Shipowners' Association, Jan Fritz Hansen told maritimedanmark.
"You could say that it is an indication that the conditions for Danish shipping are competitive and stable,” Fritz Hansen added. “It is also a good signal that we, together with the Danish Maritime Authority, are working to develop quality shipping with a modern and environmentally-friendly merchant fleet, "
According to the association’s figures, the capacity of Denmark’s merchant fleet has grown by 700.000 TDW (tonnage dead weight) this year and stood at 14.2 million TDW in July. Over the past 10 years, the fleet’s tonnage capacity has doubled.
