USA Success for Novo’s Victoza

28-07-2010 09:26 Novo Nordisk’s diabetes drug Victoza is well on the way to achieving its targets the U.S. market, writes Børsen.

After five months on the market, the Danish pharma company’s new drug now accounts for 26 percent of all GLP-1 class diabetes prescrip0tions and 33.9 per cent. of all new GLP-1 prescriptions

Victoza is only the second drug that has been introduced in this particular drug class, and is winning market share from Eli Lilly's Byetta, which was launched in 2005.

"Byetta is losing its share of new prescriptions at a faster pace than the total prescription total, indicating that more doctors are prescribing patients with Victoza instead of Byetta," explains analyst Yaron Werber of Citigroup U.S..

The latest weekly statistics show that the number of new Victoza prescriptions increased by 13.6 percent. to 7232, while the total number of new prescriptions increased by 15 percent. to 12,163.
