Surprising employment decrease

30-06-2010 11:15 New data from Statistics Denmark show that a small quarterly increase in the employment of 0.2 per cent in the first three months of the year has now been revised to a decrease of 0.4 per cent.
This means that net 12,400 people lost their employment in the first quarter of the year. The figures cover big differences in the private labour market and public labour market. It is very much the private labour market which is negatively affected by the crisis, while the public employment increased by 0.7 per cent.
Since 2008, when the labour market peaked, the employment has decreased by totally 180,000 persons, Statistics Denmark wrote.

The general picture of the situation for the Danish economy is, however, more or less unchanged with a slight adjustment downwards of the growth from 0.6 per cent from the fourth quarter 2009 to the first quarter of 2010.
The handsome export growth in the first quarter turned out to be less impressive with an adjustment downwards from 3.6 per cent to 1.3 per cent. On the other hand, the private consumption looks better with a growth of 1.7 per cent.
»This supports our view that the Danish way to tackle the crisis aimed at the households is working,« chief analyst Jakob Legård Jakobsen at Nykredit wrote.
