EU adjusts its expectations for Danish growth downwards

In a preliminary economic spring forecast the EU Commission estimates the Danish growth 2012 at 1.1 per cent and thus downgrades its estimate half a year ago.
The GNP growth of 1.1 per cent is a downgrading compared to EU’s forecast in the autumn when the Commission expected a GNP growth of 1.4 per cent.
According to the forecast, the growth of the Danish economy is mainly due to the domestic trade, but EU also expects that the private consumption will gain momentum when the Danes choose to withdraw their contributions to the early retirement scheme. On the other hand, the fragile housing market as well as other external factors affect the growth prospects negatively.
With the positive growth forecast, Denmark is one of 18 EU countries which may expect an improved economy in 2012. Totally, EU expects a zero growth of the economy, while it expects a negative economic growth of 0.3 per cent for the euro zone countries.
