New setback for the retail trade

01-02-2012 10:24 Increasing prices for foods reduce last year’s Christmas trade. In general, the retail sales were more or less stable during the second half-year 2011. According to Statistics Denmark the retail sales in December were 0.1 per cent lower than in November, adjusted for price development and normal seasonal fluctuations.

It was especially a decline of 1.1 per cent in the sale of foods and other staple goods which account for 44.5 per cent of the total retail sales that dragged down the Christmas sales result. The decline is attributed to an increase of the foods prices. On the other hand, the sale of clothing rose 0.8 per cent, while the category “other consumer goods” rose 0.5 per cent.

After a considerable decline from April to July, the retail sales were reasonably stable in the second half-year 2011. Retail sales in the period October-December were at the same level as in the period July-September, Statistics Denmark wrote.
