Employment rose in the second quarter

Data from Statistics Denmark show that for the first time since the third quarter 2008 the Danish employment rose in the second quarter 2010. The employment increased by 45,000 persons from the first to the second quarter and thus six quarters’ trend with falling employment is broken.
»This is positive news for the economy that the strong decline in the employment which we have seen since the begining of the crisis apparently has stopped now,« said economist Bo Sandberg at Dansk Erhverv (the Danish Chamber of Commerce).
Dansk Erhverv notes, however, that part of the reason for the increased employment in the second quarter is that the cold winter in the first quarter resulted in a number of postponed projects – for example in the construction sector.
»It must also not be ignored that the employment in the second quarter 2010 continues to be about 60,000 persons below the level in the second quarter last year, and that the labour force continues to fall, among other things as a result of the continued accession of workers to the early retirement scheme,« Bo Sandberg said.
