Largest decline in the employment since 1995

18-03-2010 10:36 The number of employed persons plunged in the fourth quarter of 2009 by 151,000 persons. According to new data from Statistics Denmark, this corresponds to a loss of 61.8 million working hours compared to the same quarter the previous year. This is the biggest decline in the employment since 1995.
It is especially in the private sector that the number of employed persons has been shrinking, as 8.6 per cent of the employed persons have left the labour market. In the public administration and service the employment has increased by 1 per cent. According to the Danish Chamber of Commerce this development is a problem.

»Because of the small year groups of young people the private businesses may be short of workers in the future, and when the offer of workers is reduced, it will put a pressure on the salaries and hurt the Danish competitiveness which is already affected by difficult circumstances,« said chief economist Jens Brendstrup at the Danish Chamber of Commerce (Dansk Erhverv).

Chief economist Steen Bocian at Danske Bank believes that today’s figures for this explosive decline in the employment show that the crisis is worse than the official unemployment figures are indicating.

»Today’s employment figures do not confirm the picture of a development on the labour market in the second half-year 2009 being a little more favourable than in the first half-year 2009 – although the unemployment figures have indicated an improvement,« Steen Bocian said and added:

»The fact that the employment is falling more than the unemployment is increasing means that the labour force is decreasing.
