Today CEO Tom Knutzen, Danisco, and Danisco’s American partner Goodyear receive the award »Environmental Achievement of the Year«. This international award to Danisco’s golden egg, bio-isoprene, furthers the dream of big sums ahead for Danisco.
The tyre giant and the Danisco subsidiary Genencor’s partnership will be acclaimed at the Geneva International Motor Show, where the companies behind the global automotive industry are now meeting.
Danish Danisco has entered the show through its cooperation with Goodyear. Danisco has invested USD 50 million in the development of bio-based isoprene for Goodyear’s tyres in replacement of the petroleum-derived isoprene for synthetic rubber.
The reward and the appreciation bring Danisco out of the shadow because the automotive industry’s environmental reward for the sustainable tyre comes from the customers of the future, CEO Tom Knutzen, Danisco, said.
»We see it as a landmark that the product will now be put into use. The automotive industry acknowledges that bio-isoprene can turn out to be something big,« Tom Knutzen told borsen.dk.

Tom Knutzen underlines three important reasons for developing isoprene from nature’s own agents. Bio-isoprene emits less greenhouse gasses, it reduces the supply risk by replacing crude oil, and the technology is sustainable.
»This is an example of what white biotechnology can do. The crude oil will be an expensive and scarce resource, and the tyre producers are worried that there will not be sufficient isoprene in nature,« Tom Knutzen said.
