Big decline in the retail sales

01-03-2010 10:44 The retail sales fell in January 0.9 per cent after a decline in all three classes of goods. The decline is surprisingly big.
Data from Statistics Denmark show that the biggest fall in the seasonally adjusted volume index for the retail trade was registered in clothing which declined 2.6 per cent. Handelsbanken and Nordea had expected a smaller decline in the retail sales of 0.2 and 0.1 per cent respectively.

After an increase in the retail sales in the second half-year 2009 the economists had begun expecting a stabilisation, but the January sales have now weakened this confidence. The retail sales were in January 2010 3.2 per cent lower than the retail sales in January 2009.

After a significant decline in 2008 the retail sales have been quite stable.
»The decline in January 2010 does not change this picture, but the retail sales are now at the second lowest level since December 2004. Only September 2009 was lower,« Statistics Denmark wrote.
Apart from the clothing decline of 2.6 per cent the January decline of 0.9 per cent was affected by foods and other staple goods which declined 0.9 per cent, while the sales of other consumer goods fell 0.4 per cent.
