Danish business caught in a wave of bankruptcies

04-09-2009 14:05 The crisis in Danish business continues to cost many businesses their lives. In August 507 businesses had to shut down, seasonally adjusted. This is nearly as many as the two previous months.
»The number of bankruptcies has thus been stable the last three months and continues at a higher level than ever,« Statistics Denmark wrote. In actual figures, 364 businesses went bankrupt in August after 475 the previous month.
»The actual number of bankruptcies is 58 per cent higher than in August last year with 230 bankruptcies,« Statistics Denmark added.

The number of bankruptcies has never been higher in the history of the Statistics which started in 1979.
»The continuous high number of bankruptcies can only be described as extremely worrisome. We must hope that the signs of stabilization which we have seen in the global economy and to a smaller extent in the Danish economy will mean that we can break the vicious circle in the near future,« chief economist Jes Asmussen at Handelsbanken wrote and added:
»But this does not change the fact that 2009 will inevitably be the worst year for bankruptcies since the beginning of the statistical registrations in 1979.«
